National Road Safety week

18 May 2022

National Road Safety Week aims to highlight the impact of road trauma, honour those that have been lost and strives to make the roads safer for everyone.

Over 10,000 people are killed or injured on NSW roads each year. Since 2017, more than 45,000 people have been supported under the CTP scheme.

SIRA takes an active role in supporting key NSW road safety projects that educate, inform, and promote a positive road safety culture.

SIRA committed more than $3 million this financial year to support 13 road safety projects.

Safe Drivers Course

Traffic injuries are the second biggest killer of 15–25 year-old Australians. SIRA supports the Safe Drivers Course, which is specifically designed to help new young drivers understand speed management, gap selection, hazard awareness, safe following distances, and driving safely when distracted. As of December 2021, over 203,000 Learners have participated in and completed the course.

Road Safety in Your Workplace

In NSW, almost 30 per cent of workplace fatalities are a result of road crashes, and around one in four deaths on NSW roads are people driving for work. SIRA supports the Transport for NSW ‘Road Safety in Your Workplace’ program, which engages with employers and workers across New South Wales to embed a positive road safety culture within the workplace. To date, the program has reached over 6 million people since its inception in December 2011. The program won the national ACRS Diamond Road Safety Award in 2021.

Motorcycle Safety

Almost one in four people hospitalised as a result of road trauma in NSW is a motorcyclist. SIRA provides funding to support the Transport for NSW  ‘Ride to Live’ campaign. SIRA also supports MotoCAP, which tests and provides ratings for motorcycle gear to helping riders choose the right protection.

SIRA has provided funding to a variety of other road safety projects and partnerships this year that focus on preventative measures to make roads safer for everyone.
